First day in salt water. Eric from Boat Mobile Transports and I were on the road by 9am and it rained most of the way to Cove Harbor. It was quite surreal following Prana to the coast. Almost as if this little adventure belongs to someone else, and I was just following for the view. An out-of-boat experience. We put the mast up in the rain, and after Eric left, I tried to make Prana look proper. It was a real mess inside, and the downpour outside did not make it easy to clean up. My deck is a shade of purple from hull paint dust that Prana acquired at the haul-out marina and I will have to scrub it hard to get the boat white again. Other than a few items, the boat arrived in fine shape and was lifted into the water without any dramas. I'm tied up to boat ramp for the night and have just finished plotting my move to Rockport on a fishing chart. 4 miles tops. Kiva and I did get a walk around House of Boats during a break in the rain. I believe she examined every boat in the yard, probably in search of the yard cat. A tough black cat which looks like it could tear Kiva up.

It actually was not raining this morning so I got up at dawn and put the rudder in place. Played with the rigging for a while, but will save most of that for next weekend. Met John Barstow from Windy Point fame. He has the Westsail 32 behind me. I've already been adopted by a local kid, who was nice enough to give me advice on the area. On my way to Rockport, I was escorted by about 20 dophins that came about from all sides. I could see some playing up head in the channel, jumping and flipping and such. Next minute they were all around the boat. Kiva was running around the bow, peering over the rail with surprised eyes and her head cocked. You just know she's thinking in her head.... "Oh My, Oh My, Oh My...." She did not know what to make of it. I enjoyed the scene very much. Found a transient slip at Rockport without much trouble and tied up for a few weeks stay, putting 5 lines out to keep my boat off the dock and shrimp boats. Late in the afternoon, I ran back to Cove Harbor to fetch my truck, and was attacked by huge mosquitos. They were as big as frick'n bats. Felt like I was being stuck by darts.

I have been sick the last few days and considered not coming down to Rockport. The boat faired well while I was in Austin, which was a concern for me as I have never tied up my boat where there was a tide. The first task of the morning was to put some nuts on the chainplate bolts. For some unknown reason the nuts were missing. They were not on the boat when it arrived last weekend, and I have no idea where or when or why they were removed. Basically, without these nuts, the bolts that mount the chainplates (and thus the mast) are not secure. The next task was to adjust and tension the rigging. I had read about the process of adjusting the rigging and knew the basics. I thought I had done quite well until I looked up the sail slider grove and noticed it was bent to starboard. Using the grove as a sight made getting the mast straight a bit easier.

I had also intend to work on the water bladder, but the weather was so nice and the wind was up, that I decided to sail to Mud Island and spend the night. Mud Island is 6 miles South of Rockport and is a common ancorage for the locals. It was a little stressful getting to Mud Island (I got withing 1 mile) since it was a windward slog into ~20kts, and in the end, I turned tail and headed back to Rockport and the shelter of the marina. The sail was a learning experience, my first sail in salt water with Prana. I celebrated with blacked shrimp cooked on my little stove... and a Dead Guy.

At midnight the wind started to really kick up, which made me feel pretty good about skipping Mud Island. On the Beaufort Scale, 20 knot wind is rated a 5 and is considered 'Fresh'. I think 'Kick'n' would be more Gen-X. 'Fresh' is what you tell Mom. You would not tell your friends over an Arrogrant Bastard that the wind was 'Fresh'. You would tell them that the wind was 'Kick'n' and that the rain pierced your skin causing rivers of blood to pour from the scruppers, taunting the numerous sharks following in your raging wake. Judging from the flags, I'd say it was force 6 tonight, a 'Strong Breeze' on the scale. Sandbaggers! I'd call it 'Rodeo Time'. Lucky, it only lasted till 3am, and I was tied to a dock.

The morning was spend removing the old water bladder and piping. In all, it was easy to remove, and I took my time. A slow day, as a day on a sailboat should be. The excitement of the day came when I blew a tire on the interstate just outside of San Antonio. There was a quarter size hole in my front right tire. First time that has happened to me, and I'm very glad it happen today rather than last weekend in the rain.

It has been two weeks since I last was here in Rockport. My good friends, Glenn, Colleen and Jan (not Janet) threw me a going away party last friday. People were asked to bring a book and a photo. So, now I have a crate full of books to keep me busy and Prana as a list to starboard. I might have to divide up the crate a bit. Since I have been interested in the history of mathematics, in particular, Euclidean Geometry, I have started with 'Euclids Window'. Thanks Jim.

The drive to Rockport was uneventful, and I was extremely happy to have the boat in good shape when I arrived. I packed away most of the small stuff that I brought, the books from the party, some kitchen stuff, etc. Had a shrimp dinner with a glass of wine from a bottle Scott from ARG gave me. Tommorrow will be a busy day.

Today was a rare day. Rare in that I got all my boat work done. It was cold last night, so I threw on Karen's blanket she knitted for me. Thanks, Karen. The day was in the 70's and I could see all the way across Aranass Pass, to the oil rigs and beyond. The installation of the new water bladder went as planned, only requiring one trip to Seaworthy to fetch another water intake hose. I was done by 1pm. Therefore, I inflated the new Zodiac, put the Nissan 3.5hp on it and went out for a ride in the bay. I was a little nervious with the new motor and boat, so I packed a paint bucket with a VHF radio, GPS, chart, compass and water. My new self prepared dingy kit. It was fun, but a little wet. Much better after I adjusted the pitch of the motor. The funny thing is that I have to sit in the center of the boat or it steers to one side. The flexible bottom acts like a keel. Kiva got to try her new harness today. Thanks Ross, Scott, Melissas and Kim. Sure makes moving her to and from the boat easy. Effectively, she becomes a carry on.

Not a lot interesting happened today. Last night, I had gone to HEB and picked up a load of groceries and dog food. Filled the entire cart. This morning was spent removing all the labels off the cans. Yes, I did label them. And I also balanced out the boat a little bit by strategically placing cans all over the place. 6 rolls of papers towels, 12 rolls of TP, and a few tissue boxes went up in the bow. Basically, I was expermenting with the placement of stuffs. I also removed and rearranged previously stored stuff, trying to reduce weight. The dumpster near Prana will be a gold mine for the dumpster divers this evening.

My good friend Rob drove me to Rockport this morning. We had spent Thanksgiving on Mustang Island and I much appreciated his send off. Pete, who owns a Union 30 on Lake Travis was on the coast looking for a marina for his boat. He stopped by and we made a outboard motor bracket for the stern rail. We did not do a very good job, but it will work for now. At least, the dingy motor is out of the cabin. Pete and I went for a sail in the late afternoon spent the night on the hook just off Rockport. It was a bumpy night, as the wind shifted on us and came across the bay. Kiva was sick all night with the shits, a delayed revenge of the beach.
